THIS WEEK’S CULTURAL START-UP: SPIDEO

The journalist Isabelle Repiton creates for Stellifax* focus on startups. With the authorization of Satellifax*, the Forum d’Avignon would like to introduce: Spideo’s recommendation technology helps viewers discover TV and movies they love, and helps content providers better understand monetize their users.

What is your company’s objective?

Spideo wants to become the reference for recommendation, develop an international clientele and help the actors of the digital video distribution go through the evolutions of the sector.

What challenges do you face in your development?

After an intense development on the commercialization of our technologies in France, the development challenge for Spideo is to expand Internationally. With our first contracts won in the United States, in Latin America and in Asia, we are trying to position Spideo as a futur world leader in the recommendation field. It’s a commercial challenge but also a cultural one with the settlement of local teams who have an expert knowledge of the business and audiovisual codes of the regions we target. To assist us in this development we are setting up projects which provide visibility to our technologies, such as our iPhone and iPad applications and our blog about cinema and television : « Spideo club ».

What does it mean to be a cultural entrepreneur?

For us, being a cultural entrepreneur is to defend and offer a certain way to access culture. At Spideo, we try to fight VOD’s « survival of the fittest » where every blockbuster and every newly released movie starring a bankable actor automatically finds its way at the forefront. Whereas many people criticize « recommendation » when it aims to promulgate an idea or a tendency, we came up with an entirely different goal by adding the notion of « discovery ». We wanted to free ourselves from the homepage diktat and allow our recommendation to enable precious movies and discrete works of art to get the visibility that they deserve and be, in their turn, at the forefront.

Spideo's founders: Gabriel Mandelbaum, Paul de Monchy and Thibault D’Orlso.
