CULTURAL START-UP OF THE WEEK: Artelia Editions

As part of its series on cultural entrepreneurship, the Forum d'Avignon makes you discover: Artelia Editions, a publishing house specialized in art, history, architecture and heritage books. It highlights emblematic sites throughout France, mythical places, emerging or leading artists.

What is your project/idea/start-up?

Artelia is a publishing house specialized in fine art and history books. We are willing to promote the French heritage and to allow connoisseurs as well as novices to better understand the heritage. Our goal is to educate all publics: both those who visit the site in question, and those who discover it in a distant bookshop. This is why we work as much with mu- seums, castles, hotels, as with zoos, natural gardens, etc. Each structure gets a publication that is entirely dedicated to her and where are presented its history, its architecture and its current activity.

What is your current challenge?

We look after maintaining the most affordable selling price possible. The operation happens to be complex facing the tight prices of the big publishing houses. We have set up various formats (coffe-table, medium, pocket, panoramic format) in order to satisfy every taste and budget. Artelia suffers from a lack of recognition that we correct through a continued prospection of places. We are working on various communication channels to establish our reputation.
We hold for each book release some events with authors (press conference, cocktail parties). Finally, we are currently reworking our website to make our content richer and more attractive.

For you, what does it mean to be a cultural entrepreneur?

For Artelia’s members acting as a cultural entrepreneur in 2016 implies a huge investment! Our action is not part of the basic needs but it is into our direction that people come du- ring their free time: reading, visits, etc. Large paradox suggesting the need for culture. To fund our books, we have to deal with both the purchasing power of the structures and with the one of our future readers. The complexity of our work lies in the checking of already existing sale points, the assessment of means differences of structures. Our flexibility guarantees the right financing of our works.
