We knew that we could 'see' with all our senses, with our heart. It was also known that 'augmented' reality, a barbaric concept which appeared in 1962 with the creation of the Sensorama by Morton Heilig, allowed to superimpose virtual elements in real world and could well enrich our daily life (from the application that indicates the waiting for the next bus to QR codes giving access to a description of a painting in the museum next door).
Theorized by Ronald Azuma, augmented reality has three characteristics: it combines real and virtual elements, it is interactive and real-time, and finally, it requires a 3D environment. Far from being science fiction, augmented reality is a source of imagination and creativity in everyday life, for technophiles as much as for profane citizens.
A new step was taken by Google X, the Google research laboratory, with the presentation of a prototype of connected glasses, the "glass project". Without impeding the vision of the user, an icon bar appears on the screen, allowing, once the glasses connected to a smartphone,to navigate by selecting various features from traditional (eg. sending a message, use of applications) to more original ones, made possible by the magic of augmented reality. The user can then interact with the outside world, in real time, combining his actual perceptions to a virtual model of reality, whose elements are recognized and analyzed by cameras incorporated into the glasses.
An incentive to change our perspective?
