Who is ORLAN?

ORLAN lives and works in Paris, Los Angeles and New York. She explores different artistic practices: photography, video, sculpture, drawing, installation, performance, biotechnology etc. She was the first artist to use surgery as an artistic medium in 1990-1993. 

In 2003, ORLAN was promoted to the rank of Chevalier de l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres. In 2007, at the occasion of her retrospective at the Musée d'Art Moderne de Saint-Etienne, ORLAN receives the Gold Medal of Saint-Etienne and the Bronze Medal of Saint-Etienne, her hometown. In 2010, ORLAN was decorated with the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite. 

Several retrospectives have been dedicated to ORLAN, including at the Centre of Photography of Salamanca, the Museum of Modern Art in Saint-Etienne, Centre National de la Photographie in Paris and Tallinn Art Hall, Estonia. Her works have been exhibited in many places, such as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the LACMA in Los Angeles, the PS1 in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Vitoria, the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, the European House of Photography in Paris, the Museum of Antioquia in Medellin, or the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. 

ORLAN regularly gives courses and lectures in international universities.
