Who is Jérôme Clément?

After studying Law and Literature, and graduating from the Institut d’études politiques de Paris, Jérôme Clément joined the Ecole nationale d’administration (ENA) in 1970.

In 1974, he began his career at the Architecture directorate then at the Heritage directorate of the French Ministry for Culture.

He then left for Egypt where he was the cultural and scientific counsellor of the French Embassy at Cairo (1980-81).

In 1981, he became the counsellor in charge of culture, international cultural relations and communication to the Prime Minister, Pierre Mauroy.

In 1984, he was named General manager of the Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC).
In March 1989, he joined Sept channel as Chairman of the Board. He took part in April 1991 in the negotiations with the Germans which led to the creation of the French-German channel ARTE, of which he became President in 1992.

He is the Chairman of the Board of Arte France until 2011 and President or Vice-President of the Management committee of Arte from 1992 to 2010. At the same time, he was CEO of Cinquième channel from April 1997 to August 2000, before it became France 5 channel. He was city councillor at Clamart from 2001 to 2010. He was elected city councillor of Thoureil in April 2014.

Jérôme Clément is a member of the Board of the Musée d’Orsay and President of the Premiers Plans Film Festival in Angers and commissioner general of Normandie Impressionniste Festival.

He chaired the Board of the Théâtre du Châtelet from 2010 to February 2015.

On June 26th 2014, he was elected Chairman of the Fondation Alliance française.

Jérôme Clément took part in several teaching activities such as University lecturer (Paris I, ENA, Sciences Po) as well as in the writing of reviews and books related to economics and culture.
He published several books: « Un homme en quête de vertu » (1992, Grasset), « Lettres à Pierre Bérégovoy » (1993, Calmann-Lévy), « La Culture expliquée à ma fille » (2000, Seuil), updated in 2012, « Les Femmes et l’amour » (2002, Stock), « Plus tard, tu comprendras » (2005, Grasset), followed by « Maintenant je sais » (2008, Grasset) and « Le choix d’Arte » (mars 2011, Grasset).

He was honoured numerous times by the French government (Commandeur de l'ordre de la Légion d'honneur, Chevalier de l'ordre national du Mérite, Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres). He is also Commander of the Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and of Baden-Württemberg.
