THIS WEEK’S CULTURAL START-UP: KAZoART

Next-up on our online cultural entrepreneur series, the Forum d’Avignon would like to introduce: KAZoART, an on-line platform to buy original artworks directly from artist studios.

What is your company’s objective?

KAZoART is a start-up launched a few months ago, that wishes to create a more accessible art market, by selling on-line original art pieces directly from artists’ workshops. On our website KAZoART proposes a catalogue of 70 artists (and tomorrow a few hundred), who express themselves using all kinds of techniques, styles, etc. Prices range from under 100 euros up to 5000 euros, with 80% of the catalogue priced under 1 000 euros. We rely on a team of curators, art market experts, who contribute to « source » artists and to recommend those from our catalogue.

What challenges do you face in your development?

Men (and women), first. Knowing how to gather the talents and energy around the project, all while working around a big financial constraint, which implies the need to even more convincing so that people foremost come join us for their passion and for the challenge proposed to them. And also financing, of course. I obtained public and para-public financing (French BPI’s subsidies, honorary loans), but I am already reaching out to investors and business angles for an upcoming fundraiser. All this while continuing to ameliorate our site, recommend artists and quality art works, interesting and engaging editorial content. Which explains the need for talented people to help me!

What does it mean to be cultural entrepreneur?

In France, these two terms seem contradictory, culture is essentially financed by public funds. One of my objectives for creating a start-up in the cultural domain, is to prove that it is possible to do beautiful projects, of quality, based on truly lasting and profitable economic models. At KAZoART, we do not wish to give up on the quality of our art selection that will always remain very demanding, which on the contrary I think a guarantee for commercial success.
