Creativity has become the virtually ever-present ray of hope in education, business, science, cities, and society. There seems to be no way of avoiding creativity – whether it is in the future planning of cities ("Creative City"), in the latest digital economic areas ("Creative Cloud"), in the construction of citizen-orientated administrations ("Creative Governance") or in healthcare ("Creative Healing Environments").
Creativity has developed from a sector term of the Cultural and Creative Industries into a seemingly universal characteristic for shaping our future – as evidenced by the very latest analyses from this year's World Economic Forum in Davos. Not least because of this universality, creativity as a concept also consistently produces an amount of controversies. That is why it is of crucial importance to better understand its current significance and its potential for the future in a rapidly changing world, but also to critically challenge its ability to shape the world and to test its limits.
Artists and creative minds, politicians, entrepreneurs and scientists from throughout Europe will be attending the Forum d'Avignon Ruhr 2016 to discuss creativity as an ever-present ray of hope and its potential for more traditional areas of large-scale industry, the new digital economy and ultimately for culture itself. Business concerns will be compared to their cultural counterparts, urban visionaries and artists will present remarkable projects, while the Forum also seeks to test the limits of creativity.
The presentation of the N.I.C.E Award, the European prize for innovations in culture and creativity endowed with 20,000 euros in prize money, will be one of the highlights during the Forum.
The fifth edition of Forum d'Avignon Ruhr takes place at the Philharmonie Essen. The listed building of the Philharmonie located at the Stadtgarten was reopened in 2004 after fundamental renovations and has impressed the audience since then with the compositon of the historical important Saalbau and the aesthetic modern redesign.
The premises at the interface of culture and economy provide a suitable setting for this year’s Forum d'Avignon Ruhr on 25 August 2016.
