Contribution: "Enterprising culture" by David Throsby

Artists working in different artforms are increasingly extending their core artistic practice to embrace new ways of using their creative skills.

To do this they become, for at least part of their time, cultural entrepreneurs, a mode of working that requires imagination, flexibility, dynamism and a willingness to take risks.

Sometimes artists follow this path alone, but often they work in groups, where the creative interactions may lead in new and surprising directions. It is a challenge, but the cultural and economic rewards can be great. The work of these artists epitomises the concept of Enterprising Culture, a notion that links the creative arts with the innovation economy.
