Candide, or the (re)birth of the book

Orange and the French National Library fulfilled a dream: poetry and knowledge gathered together in a digital book. Original manuscript, commentaries from the author, annotations, discover and constitution of worlds to share, the 2012 Candide isn’t only a technological prowess, it is also an invitation to Voltaire’s magic that has been presented during the Forum d’Avignon 2012.

The application « Candide, the enriched version » is now available on the App Store.

Developed by Orange, in partnership with the French National Library and the Voltaire Foundation, this free App enables the reader, in a both playful and scientific approach, to discover or rediscover this major piece of Voltaire.

The App offers simultaneously the text and the original manuscript, an audio reading by the actor Denis Podalydès, and illustrations of the different editions of Candide and the annotations of the critical edition.

In the World part, the reader follows Candide’s trip thanks to an interactive map, has an access to the iconographic album and to the scientific interviews which contribute to the understanding of the work.

Finally, in the collective and collaborative garden of Candide, we have acces to the trees of knowledge created by other readers.
